How Miley Cyrus went from a twerking diva to becoming America’s sweetheart

Miley Cyrus looked like a goddess during her performance alongside Sir Elton John at the Grammys. Her voice is spectacular, the music that she makes if brilliant and she looks more beautiful than ever before. One could almost forget the fact that the girl singing the duet with Elton is the same one that twerked against Robin Thicke at the 2013 VMAs.

It was not so long ago that Miley, who had stolen the hearts of millions of Americans as the pop star/regular teenager Hannah Montana, went through her rebellious years right in the middle of the spotlight. Many child stars from Lindsay Lohan to Amanda Bynes have had their unruly years captured on camera. However, only a select few, like Britney Spears, get to make a comeback after going through a long wild-child phase.

Miley, however, is among the few who continued to stay relevant through her negative and positive publicity years. How did she manage it, though? We know a huge part of her transition to becoming the Miley we know and love is thanks to her fiancé Liam Hemsworth. After all, the constant wagging of her tongue, the twerking and the outrageous outfits had all begun just a few months before their break-up. Soon after her transition to being this more “normal” version, they got back together as well.

The Malibu singer has been candid about how the rapid change in her attitude and persona at the time is of the main reasons for their breakup. “…I needed to change so much. And changing with someone else not changing like that is too hard,” she had told Billboard. “Suddenly you’re like, ‘I don’t recognize you anymore.’ We had to re-fall for each other.”

Liam and Miley, who met and fell for each other while shooting for The Last Song, had even gotten engaged before breaking up by end of 2013. We are placing the break-up soon after Miley twerked on stage while wearing a onesie. In the middle of all the controversy wherein Miley was accused of killing the idea of Hannah Montana as a role model for many kids, she also unfollowed Liam on Twitter.

Soon afterward, she even released what is arguably the most controversial music video of her career – Wrecking Ball. In the video of the song, which she reportedly wrote about Liam, she wore a white tank top and underwear that left very little to the imagination. Couple that with her suggestive hammer licks and rocking on the wrecking ball, and she found herself in the middle of yet another controversy.

Since then, Miley has been controversy’s favorite child, with stories about her carrying and smoking weed getting quite the coverage. However, as Miley herself – while she was dressed as Justin Bieber – pointed out during an SNL sketch, it is was “totally legal” for her smoke them. There were also fake stories about her, one of which even held her accountable for plotting President Trump’s assassination.

Trump’s assassination aside, she was admittedly living on the edge for a couple of years, during which she also came out as pansexual and allegedly even dated Stella Maxwell for a while. This period of her life also came with nipple pasties, see-through dresses, and a no f***s given attitude.

Despite her being called an attention seeker at the time, Miley has reiterated that none of her action came from the need to draw eyeballs. Especially about her habit of sticking her tongue out, she says, “I was so embarrassed to be on the red carpet and so many of those fucking disgusting photographers would tell me to blow a kiss, and that’s not me! I don’t want to blow you a kiss,” she said, adding, “I didn’t know what to do with my face, so I stuck my tongue out, and it became a rebellious, punk-rock thing.

However, she says a lot of her actions during her early 20s is the result of being chaperoned by her father and grandmother throughout her teenage years – a time when people usually get the opportunity to explore themselves. “I didn’t get a school escape like most people,’ Miley revealed during her appearance on Zach Sang Show, adding, “I went to work with my dad. …That was really hard, every day from like 11 to 18. …And then I started driving my dad towards the end because I could start driving, and then my grandma went with me.”

“… When I turned 18, you wondered why I was twerking at the Juicy J show. I just spent 10 years every day with my dad and grandma. I had to break free,” Miley further explained.

Another reason for her scandalous behavior was also due to the fact that she was admittedly quite hazy during that period. She told during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, “I had this dream that I would die during my monologue on SNL for some reason. That I would just get so stoned that I just died, which I Googled, and that’s never happened. Thank God … I was smoking a lot of weed. No one’s ever died from weed, but no one has ever smoked as much as I did. So, it’s like, they don’t really know.”

The nightmare and the result revelation is what led Miley to finally give up on weed totally as well. She revealed that she made some music that she was very passionate about, and when she spoke about it to people, she wanted to be the smartest, sharpest version of herself. She wanted people to take her seriously, which is why her clothes got a makeover too.

She further told Billboard as well. “I like to surround myself with people that make me want to get better, more evolved, open. And I was noticing, it’s not the people that are stoned. I want to be super clear and sharp because I know exactly where I want to be.” Further, she spoke about being a judge on The Voice to Billboard, and she explained how the whole reason for her to be on the show is to reach beyond her circle of “outspoken liberals” and inspire a fanbase among the listeners of Country music and the Red Staters.

She has been a part of the show since 2016 and we get to see first-hand, how knowledgeable of a coach she is. However, had she sported her onesies of nipple pasties, she probably would not have been able to get through to her teammates as much as she has been able to, she feared. “I like talking to people that don’t agree with me, but I don’t think I can do that in an aggressive way,” says Cyrus. “I don’t think those people are going to listen to me when I’m sitting there in nipple pasties, you know?”

Around mid-2017, she had claimed to be completely clean of drugs and alcohol.

However, even before all this, by late 2015, she had already started at least getting back in touch with Liam and may have even started dating him.

In October of the year, we had spotted both Liam and Miley in very similar-looking Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle onesies. It could have been a coincidence, but who are we kidding? It’s the same one… We think.

Soon afterward, Miley had helped Liam adopt his four-legged BFF, Dora the Explorer. They then spent the 2017 New Year’s Eve together in Australia, and the rest is history. The one thing that Miley from before her wild phase and after her wild phase have in common is Liam. It is safe to say that he has a huge part in keeping her sane even as she navigates the crazy world of showbiz, as she does him.

Whether Miley was twerking or she is coaching, the one thing that has remained intact is her heart of gold. Even as her name got dragged into the mud during her rebellious phase, Miley was spearheading a campaign that helped young homeless people of America.

Now, as Miley gets hailed as America’s sweetheart again, she is running the Happy Hippie Foundation, which focuses on youth homelessness, the LGBTQ community, and other vulnerable populations.

Miley also recently helped one of her The Voice teammates, Janice Freeman, buy the house she wanted by paying the deposit and six months’ worth of rent a temporary apartment.

So, in conclusion, superficially, Miley may have gone from twerking against Robin Thicke to singing a duet with Sir Elton John, but in the heart of it, she has always continued to be an awesome human being.
